The New Mother

Taking care of yourself after birth is priority #1:

A mother needs to take good care of herself to rebuild her strength. You will need plenty of rest, good nutrition, and help during the first few weeks.

Getting Plenty of Rest is KEY
Every new parent soon learns that babies have different time clocks than adults. A typical newborn awakens about every three hours and needs to be fed, changed, and comforted. Especially if this is their first baby, parents - especially the Mother can become overwhelmed by exhaustion.

  • In the first few weeks, a mother needs to be relieved of all responsibilities other than feeding the baby and taking care of herself.

  • Sleep when the baby sleeps. This may be only a few minutes rest several times a day, but these minutes can add up.

  • Save steps and time. Have your baby's bed near yours for feedings at night.

  • Many new parents enjoy visits from friends and family, but new mothers should not feel obligated to entertain. Feel free to excuse yourself for a nap or to feed your baby.

  • Get outside for a few minutes each day. You can begin walking and postpartum exercises, as advised by your physician.

  • After the first two to three weeks, introduce a bottle to breastfed babies for an occasional night-time feeding. This way, someone else can feed the baby, and you can have a longer period of uninterrupted sleep.

Also Make sure your home is baby proofed for your first child with Safety Gates and Locks as you can often become distracted by a newborn needs, so to will a Toddler with increased curiousity and playful enthusiasm. Making sure your home is Child Proofed gives you both peace of mind and a little breathing room to focus on all aspects of being both a new parent and with your first!

Another reason for a Safety Gate:

West Vancouver toddler saved from pool

Last Updated: Friday, July 23, 2010 | 8:24 AM PT

Another Vancouver-area toddler is recovering in hospital after nearly drowning in a family's backyard pool, the second such incident in less than a month.

West Vancouver police Sgt. Paul Skelton said the boy was at home with a parent and a nanny at their Horseshoe Bay residence when he wandered out of sight.

"They quickly checked the general area and found him in the pool. They quickly retrieved him from the pool and a nanny who was on scene administered CPR," said Skelton.

The nanny managed to revived the toddler and he was then taken to hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery, said Skelton.

Early this month a two-year-old girl who was found floating face down in a backyard swimming pool in Surrey, B.C. was also saved by a quick-thinking family friend who gave the child CPR.
